I am surprised the FAA let the NWS talk them into letting us do as much snow reporting as we are required to do. I can see the SNINCR and the 4/sss data as being operationally useful. but the 933RRR group is of no use except in hydrology. and the 931nnn group is mainly useful for climatology.

The pilots want the runways plowed? How does the runway maintenance personnel know when to plow - they look at our data... so their contracts are fulfilled without conflict of interest (gee, there was only 1/2 inch on my porch...). The FAA gets real interested when someone lands at colder than -50F and their brakes are frozen and they can't stop... or reciprocating engines seize when they turn them off (even turbines don't land here when it's colder than -60). You'd think FAA would want to know, since those are obviously aviation related. The inability of the FAA and the NWS to coordinate let alone cooperate is a longstanding joke. Turf battle aside, FAA should either do weather - all inclusive - at airports, or get out of the way and let the NWS do it - and give them the funding to keep us.
