What part of this am I not getting... Congress tells them to leave us alone, and they proceed to announce cost cutting from CWOs to the tune of $50M - what has anyone heard - from our union, association, and/or congressfolks? Maybe this was prepared months ago and just not updated (hopefully, and the lack of update is confirmable...). Leave us alone was for the remainder of FY17. Cutting 50 million is what they want for FY18.

OK, I think I'm picturing this right... FAA promises not to eliminate the CWO program, but wants to cut $50M from us... from PATCO: It is confirmed! Here is the exact language from PATCO: The agreement provides $159,000,000 for the contract tower program. The agreement includes language preventing the elimination of the Contract Weather Observers (CWO) program, therefore a report is not required. The agreement directs F AA to develop a plan updating the controller staffing model for en route centers no later than one year after enactment. I am drafting a thank you letter from AFSCME to the Senators we worked with on this, and am happy to draft one and send on your behalf as well. In the meantime, here is the hotline you can distribute to folks to call their members of congress: 888-615-4791 Karl Stark AFSCME Federal Government Affairs Yeah, we've got a lot of work to do. PATCO's celebration a few weeks ago was much adieu about nothing. They were trying to take credit for getting the funding approved to cover service that the FAA had been told they needed to provide last summer (That's the part about language preventing the elimination of the CWO program. Those bills were signed last July and that language expires on 9/30/17). Any word on what PATCO/AFSCME is doing to stop the $50M cut proposed for FY18?

The word as I got it from my Congressman's staff was that the order not to close any CWOs was to last through 9/30/18... and then they were going to rebid at least Alaska for new contracts. I just got off the phone with his staff and they are already looking into it. Stress safety.

Everything to this point was to secure continued CWO funding through FY17 that USCWOA are working to translate into FY2018 and beyond. Congress has not approved anything beyond Sept 30th, 2017 except Appropriations which are a key stepping stone into 2018. There is A LOT going on to address future CWO issues RIGHT NOW! Such as, a slim potential for something into 2020...BUT, realistically, PLAN ON SECURING BRIEF RESPITES. These are what we call "extensions or continuing resolutions"(and there were 23 of them over 7 years prior to 2015)." Whew!...until a potential 2020 deal comes into fruition. We're living on the edge!

I see senate version of faa bill is out. 300+ pages. Didn't see any mention of CWO program ... I thought maybe the hired people were talking to senators. Apparently not.

Members of the USCWOA have access to what is going on, why not access the information instead of speculating what may or may not be going on?

It appears that a few folks are getting very anxious about the CWO Program and it's future on this forum. I can assure you USCWOA is doing all it it's power to preserve our jobs and educate lots of folks on the Hill what we stand for with regards to aviation weather safety. This week ahead is a very pivotal and crucial week on the Hill and will help determine what will actually happen to our Program. Congress is very busy with so much right now, but rest assured they are very aware of our situation and it is best at this time to just be patient, news is coming soon. It is our hope by the end of this month, a week or so, to release some news to everyone about what is transpiring in Washington. You have to know the sensitivity of posting news on the internet. We are not going to do it, until we have complete verification.
