At my station when you hear thunder that is clearly from beyond 10 miles, TS gets reported in present wx. CB is not appended to the layer. RMK example as follows: OCNL LTGIC DSNT W TS DSNT W MOV E. So interesting how people have slightly different ways to do thing. I don't think something like that would fly at my station. What do you do for this situation... Thunder is heard at 1844Z from a quick moving CB that is 8SM SE moving east. You start your thunderstorm. The hourly metar is ready to go out at 1854Z and the TS has moved beyond 10SM, which still produces lightning but you only heard that one crack at 1844Z. How do you report?

I would probably wait 5 more minutes and then take out the TS since it has to be 15 minutes after I last heard Thunder. I would look bad to have TSB44E54.

What about this?
So what happens when the parent cell producing the thunder is 12 miles from the station?

What about this? So what happens when the parent cell producing the thunder is 12 miles from the station? a poorly worded sentence. should be worded..."a thunderstorm is considered to begin when thunder is heard at the station"... notice the new TS location criteria, para 13.31, states that a TS within 5 miles of the ap is to be manually entered as TS OHD. no more TS SE...etc?? para 13.31 does not give instructions on TS 5-10 miles out. skips that and states... TS DSNT NW ("heard at the station" not meaning the thunder has to be occurring at the station) I believe a TS 12 miles out would be coded as...no entry in present weather... remarks...TS DSNT SW MOV E...for example. I believe the older 7900 stated...a tstm begins when thunder is first heard at the station. (not meaning thunder is necessarily occurring at the station.)

Well Crap I still use TS E or TS W all the time if it's 2-5 miles from station but no overhead.

Sounds like some serious training on TS needed. My recommendation - report 'em. Xmit SPECI early if your hourly takes over. End TS as appropriate 15 minutes after your last thunder.
