...and speaking of the 4-group, I was trying to figure out if that one is ONLY for snow, or ALL frozen precip. Not often we get .5 or more inches of ice pellets, but if we did, would one enter a 4-group for that?

NWS Training Guide in Surface Obervations states depth of snow, sleet(ice pellets), and glaze ice, measured for the 4 group.

Oh I already brought this up. There are some at my station that keep waiting to report 4/000 cause it does say when more than a trace is one the ground. I can't really tell them it's wrong as the 7900 isn't specific on this.

NWS training guide in sfc wx obs page 8-4 specifies that .4" is considered a trace. not coded. .5" considered an inch. coded 4/001

7900.5E 13.50 for the 4/sss, 3.9 for rounding. How much more specific do you need?

7900 13.50 should specify what defines a trace...just like the training manual. for example .1" to .4" is considered a trace and not coded. .5" considered 1 inch and coded 4/001. apparently there are enough questions about this for a more detailed explanation. I have seen sites encode 4/000...which is obviously incorrect.

LOL I just play along even though when I called they had no idea what the 4 group was I had to explain it too them. A few years ago I think they called and said they wanted 4 group and that 4/000 was fine. Ok we don't get much snow anyway so no big deal I never pressed the issue cause it really never came up. I think like 4 times total in the last 4 years we have had to have a 4 group. But now with a T on the ground and it being 20 I had some observers putting it in cause well because that was what they were told and some like me saying no it's not a reportable value. So I called. I'll just play along it's really no big deal other then the fact we might have 4/000 for the next 7 days in every ob. I was just trying to find something where it said 4/000 isn't reportable.

Snow depth is reported in whole inches - .4 rounds down to zero. Snowfall in 1/10 inches. 4/sss is reported on 6-hourly synoptic obs. At 1200Z snow depth is compared worldwide. Yeah, it would be nice if the regs were consistent - _0000 reports a trace for meltwater and for snowfall... We typically have snow on the ground mid-Sept through early May, so a trace of snow on the ground is meaningless to us, other than no mosquitos.
