a lightning strike very close to the flagstaff az ap at 2346...completely ignored by the lawrs observer. as a result...the ap gets hit without warning with strong wind gusts. when they logged off they went AUTO TSNO. but...wait...F A and A says thunderstorms not critical. In 2015, there were 2 potential level 8 cases on the FLAWD scale of the lightning project, both at Stillwater, Oklahoma. However, I deducted 1 point for ASOS being in TSNO mode at the time in both cases. Today, there is the first bona fide level 8 case!
Hector International Airport, Fargo, North Dakota, Mon 11 Jul 2016:

At 0600Z, a wind gust to 54 knots struck the airport. The NWS 5-minute observation page, has it as a gust to 62 m.p.h.:
That, of course, would meet severe criteria. However, a thunderstorm was not reported that hour. One most definitely should have been reported: On the larger map, most of the grid where the airport is located, is within 10 miles; plus parts of other grids. That shows 200+ strikes near KFAR! Also, lightning struck the airport at 0602Z, 2 minutes after the gust to 54 knots. The strike hit on or very near runway 18/36. A slightly closer bolt struck the field to the SW; using the best-resolved position, that bolt measured as hitting 4,878 feet from the control tower- less than a mile. The 0553Z METAR didn't even mention the approaching thunderstorms, which were clearly seen on radar at 0550Z:

Yet, even with lightning striking the airport, Fargo had a severe thunderstorm that went unreported!
On the FLAWD scale, this case ranks as a level 8.
