because this lawrs tower does not turn ALDARS on...obvious TS (41 knot winds at 0304) is not reported... LTGCG 4-6 miles ENE of this lawrs site..ignored by the obstroller. I live 1.5 miles WEST of this ap..and I heard some pretty loud thunder. so...between obstrollers and ltg detection systems...fail. I will forward this to ajerk21 and weathermother for their expert investigation and explanation. I think their professional opinion and guidance is needed here. Who said it only reports lightning up to 30nm away? I must have missed that one. I've seen that damn thing report LTG over 100 miles away! Very realistic, but yet it can't report LTG VC or OHD? skobie

I know both the ALS and ALDARS are only "supposed" to report DSNT lightning between 10 and 30NM. this according to the manual and weather mother. I know the ALS reports ltg beyond 30NM. I have seen the ALS report distant lightning 150 miles out. I have also seen ALDARS fail to report strikes between 10 and 30NM.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 28 Jul 2015:
I just went back and reviewed some older data. Sioux Falls (KFSD) is a part-time CWO site. Compare the observations before the Contract Weather Observer (CWO) arrived on duty in the morning (AUTO obs), to afterwards:
METAR KFSD 280756Z AUTO 20016G21KT 6SM -RA BR FEW016 FEW026 BKN075 23/22 A2975 RMK AO2 PK WND 17026/0703 RAB54 PRESRR SLP064 P0000 T02330217 $ SPECI KFSD 280801Z AUTO 18022G29KT 1 3/4SM +RA BR BKN018 BKN070 23/22 A2974 RMK AO2 PK WND 19029/0801 P0009 T02330217 $ SPECI KFSD 280809Z AUTO 15018G30KT 2SM -RA SCT019 OVC080 24/21 A2970 RMK AO2 PK WND 18030/0807 PRESFR P0026 T02390211 $ SPECI KFSD 280817Z AUTO 16015G29KT 10SM SCT022 BKN080 BKN095 24/22 A2970 RMK AO2 PK WND 18030/0807 RAE16 P0027 T02390217 $ METAR KFSD 280856Z AUTO 26006G19KT 10SM -RA FEW011 SCT065 OVC080 22/20 A2977 RMK AO2 PK WND 26031/0829 RAE16B19 SLP068 P0042 60045 T02220200 55002 $ SPECI KFSD 280947Z 03007KT 10SM -TSRA SCT090CB BKN110 OVC140 22/20 A2977 RMK AO2 TSB47 FRQ LTGICCC NE-S TS NE-S MOV E P0002 T02170200 $ METAR KFSD 280956Z 09012KT 10SM -TSRA SCT090CB BKN110 OVC140 22/21 A2976 RMK AO2 TSB47 SLP067 FRQ LTGICCC NE-SE TS NE-SE MOV E P0003 T02220206 $ SPECI KFSD 281007Z 11013KT 10SM -TSRA SCT090CB BKN110 OVC140 21/20 A2974 RMK AO2 WSHFT 0952 FRQ LTGICCC NE-SE TS NE-SE MOV E P0001 T02110200 $
Notice how there was no mention of lightning or thunder by ASOS, until the CWO arrived. So was there any lightning before then?
Yes:
There were 57 lightning bolts that struck within the red 5-mile range ring around KFSD! Those all met TS criteria; and there were plenty more lightning strikes that met VCTS criteria. Can you see the difference between letting ASOS/ALDARS run on its own, and having a contract weather observer on duty?
So where did ALDARS fail? In the detection phase? During the satellite uplink? We don't know. What we do know, is the one safeguard that
did work, was that the contract weather observer reported the lightning!
