Subject: ASOS Remarks Date: July 27, 2016 at 7:07:50 AM PDT Our team looked at some of the CWOs METARS and SPECIs. We highly encourage all of you to take a closer look at 7900.5 concerning ASOS remarks. FIRST AUGMENTED OBS and LAST AUGMENTED OBS. (This should not be used in METARS) In accordance with JO 7900.5 Paragraph 2.8 In addition, significant information elaborating on data reported in the body of the report or coded and plain language data not included in the body of the report may be appended to the report in a section referred to as "remarks." The content varies according to the type of weather station and the automated weather observing system used (see Table 14-1). Paragraph 3.2 In addition, coded plain language information that elaborates on the data in the body of the report may be appended to the METAR or SPECI. This significant information is referred to as "remarks." Table 3-2 lists the items that entered into Remarks. Operationally Significant Information such as Fog Dispersal are Runway Conditions are listed as well as the word “LAST” 14.19.Automated, Manual, and Plain Language Remarks. These remarks generally elaborate on parameters reported in the body of the report. Automated and manual remarks may be generated either by an automated or manual station. Plain language remarks can only be added by an observer. FIRST AUGMENTED OBS and LAST AUGMENTED OBS are stretching it a bit and unnecessary REMARKS, The word AUTO indicate whether or not the ASOS is augmented. Given that... ...LAST AUGMENTED OBS shouldn't appear in an AUTO observation. But often it does; e.g. New Bedford, Massachusetts,
last night:
METAR KEWB 270053Z 05003KT 10SM OVC075 27/18 A2982 RMK AO2 SLP097 T02670183 METAR KEWB 270153Z AUTO 00000KT 10SM CLR 24/19 A2985 RMK AO2 SLP108 LAST AUGMENTED OBS T02390189

FAA needs to start cleaning their own house (lawrs sites) before they jump on something insignificant as a part time CWO and first/last augmented obs. it's just another reminder that the CWO has gone home for the night...and ASOS is now on it's own.

Like Histo2 said...it would behoove the FAA to worry more about the screwed up lawrs sites and leave the CWOs alone...but they wont...Given that the FAA is still actively, under the table, and behind closed doors, in a smoked filled room, trying to screw the CWO program.. if they really want to play games and complain about stuff, lets start with the concept of having ATC log into the ASOS then go home...Like SBN!!!) the deception is clear there...there is no AUTO when they log in with XX and then go home and asos is running by itself for 6 hours So if i was AJT-21, lets stop that practice of deceiving the late night airlines and early morning departures that they have a wx observer on when they dont....the practice of log on and leaving should immediately be stopped...(FYI AJT-21, this has been going on for years since you screwed SBN and closed the CWO...)

I'd start putting LIMITED METWATCH and the hours instead, which is what the military does in these cases when they go auto. (that might be TAFs much- but I think that was LAST NO AMDS)
If it's valid in the 7900 I believe that trumps anything else- esp if in the name of safety.
