So say your altimter goes out. You have a solid "M" for hours, But you have reliable backups. The altimeter is obviosly going to be out until a technician gets there anyway. Should you augment the altimeter? Or should you just put it in the remarks section?

I agree. Ive heard ppl say never do it. IMO they are wrong. I think they are referring to "changing" it if they feel it is wrong. If it is logged out its a different story.

If it's "M", enter your backup value as a remark ALT____ - the machine recognizes remarks that start A____ as being an altimeter edit, and yes the techs have to fix it. Do NOT change the ASOS value if it is reporting one. Same goes for SLP and the 5appp.
