So, this happened on my shift earlier today. Anyone ever seen this before? And, what would our ATC friends do if/when they take over ASOS? I am sure they would be cool and collected and probably just say "weather is down" and leave it at that. Attachments:

Happened to me a few times. The only way I could get rid of it was to turn the modem off for a few minutes. Don't know what the heck it is though.....

our ceilometer has the bad habit of hitting something at 200 feet in clear conditions. tries to take a speci...etc. ATC would not even notice. just like they never notice the UP in present weather.

I have not seen something this bad, but I have seen random characters popping up due to noise in the comm lines, sometimes it is so bad you have to do a double 0 to clear it off the page.

I can't imagine if that happened to ATC during a TS or a snow storm. There would be no weather sent out...there's no way they would call their obs in...EVER. Open your eyes Congress and FAA, get your hands out of each others pants and do your freakin job!

There would be no weather sent out... ATC doesn't even send out all the SPECIs into their ATIS. If it is too close to the METAR, they wait. If the ceiling goes from 1,400 to 1,500 feet, I've heard them say, "That's only 100 feet, I'm not updating the ATIS for that."

A special being created because wx increased to 1,500 is only a special beacause of artificial made up rules. If that 100 feet is so special, then why is 1,200 increased to 1,300 not a special? The lower the ceiling the more critical the special.
