You do. The ASOS at sites that do not have the ASOS Single Site Lightning Sensor (ALS) receives the real-time lightning data via the ALDARS when cloud-to-ground lightning is detected within 30 nautical miles of the ASOS. This occurs through the ASOS-ADAS interface.

This occurs through the ASOS-ADAS interface. I was referring to, "Under this contact, Vaisala will supply the FAA streaming, real-time cloud-to-ground lightning data...". I was hoping to actually see it on a screen rather than in text format. Oh well, one can only hope. Regards.

That's what the internet is for. Given that ALDARS involves dialup technology the internet is probably faster
It's amazing how much of our weather infrastructure remains on dialup.

Regarding wxmatrix's Vaisala signs contract with the NWS - At about the same time in 2012 that Vaisala signed the contract with NWS, Earth Networks also signed a contract with NWS for lightning data. It is called Total Lightning because Earth Networks provides both LTGCG and LTGICCC data. So it appears that the NWS has two lightning contracts - Vaisala and Earth Networks. During its weekly web briefing for the media and emergency managers, the NWS shows lightning data from Earth Networks. Here is the contract story from Aug 6 2012: www.earthnetworks.com/MediaCenter/PressRelease/tabid/118/newsid513/455/Default.aspx Earth Networks own and operates WeatherBug, which supplies LTG data to the public, called Spark Alert. www.weather.weatherbug.com/spark-alert.html They provide a free smart phone app (with advertisements), or an app for purchase without ads. For a desktop computer, they only have software with advertisements.

Have noticed that "Weather Bug" is faster to display LTG than other providers such as Vaisalia, and Intellicast, etc. Will have to try: ______http://www.lightningmaps.org/realtime.

Over the last three years I have noticed NWS Electronic Technicicans talking up ALDARS as if it were the latest and greatest NWS Program ever composed. Well we all know it is far from a satisfactory program. I think the reason why the ET's are talking up ALDARS is they don't want it to fail out in the real world, which would mean ALDARS would be sent back to the originating testing site in Suitland, MD for further tweaks, changes and upgrades, and the ET's and Programers know that there is really nothing more than they can do to improve upon ALDARS. Computerization on Weather Obs has its limitations.

Military OWS's used weatherbug over its competitors when I was in the service a few years ago.

FAA would probably claim ALDARS gave 11 mins more lead time than the CWO.
They wouldn't care about all the false positives, like when train track sparks cause a VCTS.

ALDARS was reporting LTG DSNT ALQDS and there was no lightning NW-E and S-SW. I augmented the lightning remarks, and SEQN off the auto remarks for lightning. The ASOS voice still reported LTG DSNT ALQDS. The only way to remove the erroneous lightning remark is to turn the ALDARS processor off. Just so you know, you have to turn ALDARS report processing off when you are augmenting lightning remarks beyond 10SM. Unfortunately, the remark will probably not be heard as most ATCT remove remarks.
