Hearing over the past day or so a couple of sites that have had the remark " TSExx " when there was no thunder occurring prior to the remark.
If anyone has experienced this and care to share the weather sequence leading up to the TS ending remark, please post.
Thank you

cleburne, tx, AWOS. ALDARS reporting VCTS and LTG DSNT E. nearest storms are about 150 miles NE of this site. a good reason to leave aldars OFF at manned sites

Have not seen TSEXX yet, but a local ASOS site reported a VCTS with a remark or DSNT LTG NE.

Have not seen TSEXX yet, but a local ASOS site reported a VCTS with a remark or DSNT LTG NE. ASOS will only generate a TS start/stop time via ALDARS when TS is within 5 miles. VCTS is not considered being at the station, thus no start or stop time as long as TS remains within the vicinity (5-10 miles). If VCTS moves from 8 miles to 3 miles (now becoming a TS) then a SPECI will be generated to begin TS. Also when a TS moves from 3 miles out to 8 miles (now becoming a VCTS) then a SPECI will be generated to end TS.

If Present Wx is locked down will ALDARS enter TS or VCTS in Presnt Wx?

sometimes. It can even enter VCTS when you have TS in the present wx field.

Since it actually would be possible to have TS and VCTS occurring at the same time I assume that both would be XMITTED as present wx?
It looks like the folks who came up with the idea of ALDARS didn't understand the real world of observations?

I would think they are just computer programmers entering the data that someone in the FAA that "didn't understand the real world of observations" gave them. Probably the same people that are deciding the fate of the CWO program.......

VCTS is not considered being at the station, thus no start or stop time as long as TS remains within the vicinity (5-10 miles). Some sites seem to be configured to "count" VCTS as a thunderstorm. Just this morning, I found this: METAR KMGM 301253Z 8SM VCTS -RA OVC012 16/13 A3022 RMK AO2 LTG DSNT W-N TSB46RAB42 SLP232 P0000 T01560133

at some sites ASOS WILL generate a start/stop time for VCTS.

Seems to me that VCTS ought to count in the TSB/TSE times, according to the above.

that automated sensor thing, how long has that been in the book? Seems like a very recent add.

We still have a copy of the 7900.5B. It was in there as well, on page 110, paragraph 11-31.

Regarding the false TSExx RMK. We have discovered this: If, during a thunderstorm, the observer manually enters TS, and then the thunderstorm ends, then when VCTS begins sometime in the future - it can be days later - the false TSExx appears. The false TSExx only shows up when VCTS begins sometime after an observer has manually entered TS in Present Weather. TSExx does not appear following events where ALDARS automatically put TS in Present Weather.

Re TSB/TSE times. New software 3.10 is not yet installed at all ASOS locations. ASOS's at pre-3.10 sites will put TSB whenever VCTS or TS begins, in line with 7900.5C definition of the beginning of a thunderstorm. Version 3.10 sites put TSB only when TS appears in Present Wx. VCTS will not trigger the TSB RMK. And very interesting: in the version 3.10 Daily Summary, the thunderstorm weather code "3" will be generated for VCTS or TS. So we have a discrepancy - the Daily Summary considers a thunderstorm to have occurred for VCTS, but the METAR/SPECI does not. The TSB RMK is not generated for a VCTS.
