Just a couple of factors that contribute to ALDARS inaccurate reporting are Ionospheric Reflection and Refraction along with high-based thunderstorms. Someone with just a little knowledge of meteorology knows that. So to say that ALDARS is accurate lacks knowledge of the physics that is occurring with this sensor.

wait..if aldars is SO good and accurate...how come CWO's STILL have to augment for LTG/TS remarks?

So is Ken Cunningham's email kenneth.cunningham@faa.gov OR ken.cunningham@faa.gov OR kenneth.l.Cunningham@faa.gov OR something else? I think someone posted it earlier, but I cannot find it.

ALDARS at this lawrs site goes belly up at 0553Z...ref the TSNO in remarks. but there ARE tstms close enough to warrant at least a LTG DSNT remark from ALDARS...if it was working.

another LAWRS ALDARS site goes belly up with tstms nearby. but this is not to be questioned as ALDARS is accurate...according to the FAA front office...which is trained to talk to pilots

It looks like it was a nationwide ALDARS outage from 140515Z to 140700Z: Here is just a sampling of the many stations that had TSNO during this time:

"Whenever the lightning vendor Vaisala or its communications go out of service, ALDARS nationwide goes out of service."
Great.....
*****By the way, and you might want to put this on your ASOS as a sticky note for those of you who are following the ALDARS memo to a tee and forwarding all incorrect ALDARS data. And also for when your tower calls you or the local media slams your observations, or airport operations wonders what the hell is going on in your office, or even when the regional NWS or the NCDC calls to verify your obs because they can't believe them either, I would also refer all of these complaints to Ken Cunningham to have him explain the ALDARS situation because none of us can understand or explain it and shouldn't have to:
Ken Cunningham FAA Contract Weather Lead Email: ken.cunningham@faa.gov Phone: (202) 267-0823 or (202) 385-8773 (I've seen this second number used more, but both are listed for him)*****
Happy emailing or phone calling, skobie

Someone said, "ALDARS is a tool, use it." Yeah, like using a hammer to drive a screw. Gonna be a lot of bent screws, and hopefully no one dies. Sorry for the cynicism in overdrive again.

Sounds like the FAA is checking sites to see if they have ALDARS on or off...

Sounds like the FAA is checking sites to see if they ALDARS on or off... Oh yes, I am aware of 6 sites have been told in the past week to enable ALDARS, as headquarters is checking individual site configuration.

accurate ALDARS delays sending a TS speci for SIX minutes. KROW 140440Z AUTO VRB03KT 3SM -TSRA FEW026 BKN060 BKN075 23/17 A3014 RMK AO2 RAB38 TSB34 P0000 T02280167 KROW 140351Z AUTO 08004KT 10SM FEW110 24/14 A3012 RMK AO2 SLP136 T02440144 This is not due to ALDARS. When a SPECI or METAR observation is generated (either via automated data or manually entered data), the ASOS allows 5 minutes for a human observer to augment or backup the pending observation. This is referred to as edit time. When this 5-minute period expires, the observation is then transmitted (for a SPECI, provided that SPECI criteria still exists). Therefore, in this case, the ASOS generated a SPECI for TS when cloud-to-ground lightning was detected within 5 nautical miles of the airport via the ALDARS at 0434, and TS or VCTS were not reported in the last transmitted observation. This initiated the 5 minute edit time referenced above. Since there is no human observer signed on to the ASOS, the edit time elapsed. Once that expired, the SPECI was transmitted at the next One-Minute Observation at 0440Z. The ASOS and ALDARS performed as designed.
