The 3 main points I get from the FAA / ALDARS memo is:
1 - FAA accepts and authorizes the use of an automated lightning system that does not report lightning location if all discharges are within 10 miles of the airfield.
2 - Certified weather observers are not trained to determine the distance of a lightning strike.
3 - Certified weather observers must not use any resources from the internet to help in determining lightning distance.

What they are doing is minimizing our qualifications so that we will be similar to controllers. That way when they try to get rid of us again they can say no degradation. Folks, the degradation is occurring right now.

How 'bout "look similar" to obstrollers, not "be similar" - I won't stoop that low. You're right weatherwatcher - the FAA is trying to figure out how to stop our argument that we are necessary to prevent degradation so they can close us all. Tricky bureaucratic arrogant idiocy. Why is it so hard for their management to admit they have been making this mistake for 25 years? Heard from my contractor today that the FAA is planning on starting to do QC on us, supposedly to counter the fine QC of LAWRS published on this forum - they still think LAWRS is a good replacement for us, that LAWRS is our equal. I still struggle to understand why they are so determined to shutter us - it is evil, not in the interest of their mission statement nor of the interests of the United States and the safety of the NAS. How is it in their interest to close us? By the way, we're required by contract to do our own QC - don't they trust us? I'm proud of the accuracy of my station. Does LAWRS even care? - not from the appearances of their work!

let the FAA go ahead and start QCing us. they will find what we already know. for every error a CWO makes...lawrs makes 20.

They wouldn't know how to QC us if it bit them. Let them figure out their own QC program for LAWRS. One of the first things listed in the FMH-1 is to have a QC program in place for Christ sakes! What a bunch of morons these guys are in DC.

I wonder if the FAA is telling the flying community "all" about ALDARS? other than it is..."accurate"
do they tell them that ALDARS DOES NOT report the frequency/type/location of lightning? do they tell them that ALDARS is silent about lightning more than 30 NM from the AP? do they tell them that ALDARS DOES NOT report the location/movement of tstms? do they tell them that the LAWRS sites are NOT required to give this information? do they tell them that it is MANDATORY for CWO's to give this information? do they tell them that ASOS is a side job for lawrs...but a full time and the ONLY job of a CWO observer? do they tell them that the "L" in lawrs stands for LIMITED aviation weather information?
