Since "AJT-21 will conduct audits based on based on reports of erroneous weather observations based on reports from internal and external FAA stakeholders and/or randomly", let us all make sure to forward LAWRS observational errors that many of you have worked on for months on this very Board to AJT-21 (and cc AJT-22 and the CO and COR to make sure he gets them).

Seen that they consider highest risk- turning ALDARS off- seriously.

Is there a "list" somewhere alstein? Do tell (or show me where to find it). I'm curious.

I saw a QC audit from a few months back, I don't know where it is electronically- it checked CWO and LAARS sites and a few others- it showed a lot of they considered problems at LAWRS sites, some of which were egregious such as shutting off during storms, others were ALDARS being off- some CWOs got tagged as well, most were for ALDARS being off, but one was due to an employee locking in the ceiling all night somewhere and never changing it- who got "retrained"- it was I believe a Vero site. We can get a bad employee, I've seen it, but in general unlike the controllers we can be held responsible for not doing this job. I'd say about 25% of LAWRS sites were seriously dangerous taking out ALDARS, for CWOs it was just that one site out of I think 25-30. The FAA reported both numbers as higher given that they considered ALDARS the most vital thing ever.
In general, LAARS was much worse in terms of degree of problems, the real CWO problems was only that one site. I'm not counting ALDARS off as a big problem given that it's shit- but it sounds like the FAA was going to try spinning it that way.
It did seem the FAA didn't care much about remarks being slightly incorrect- which I think is fine, those things should be corrected, but if it's clear to the pilots it's not a danger. I do think we concentrate too much on minor technical errors here sometimes, when we need to be concentrating on the major risks to safety, which there are plenty of. The other thing they didn't seem to notice was LAARS folks missing storms entirely provided ALDARS was on.

Yes, missing events (and data which shut be manually put in to ASOS) altogether is an even bigger problem, but also more difficult to QC. They'd have to have a guy like tornado QCing all the LAWRS sites! But seriously, the FAA QC people need to release a more exhaustive list as an addendum to this memo or how do we know what they consider a "low" or "high" risk issues?

Their criteria was whether it presented "a significant risk to air safety". They didn't explain that at all.
That said, QC of missing events is just too big a task to be done at a national level. That's the sort of thing that can only be done locally, and there's no real motivation for that level of quality checking unless the NWS complains, and it doesn't really impact their job outside of verification, and they can radar verify, and the military warning criteria just needs winds and a lightning sensor for storms.

Here is one Calamita and his team should "investigate"--- a lot going wrong here is an understatement.

Good Lord. Can you imagine if that came out of a CWO site? The Observer On Duty would be fired on the spot!

the FAA investigating anything related to ASOS/AWOS would be like the bag boy at the grocery store investigating a major crime scene...
