At our CWO we keep track of everything that goes down with ASLOP...a monthly report is generated and given to the contractor every month...i suppose most cwos do something similar...well, by all rights, the FAA is suppose to look at these reports, but i highly doubt they do, otherwise there would be no push to try to close all the cwos...anyway just a quick summary of our station for December +/- a day or so for the entire month....
ASLOP missed over 75 times present weather with precipitation(rain, Snow,)(lawrs would have been worse) CWO corrected.... ASLOP missed over 10 times Ice pellets and freezing rain...(lawrs would be worse) CWO corrected... """ had 12 communication failures...(lawrs may or may not use AISR...most of the comm failures would have been unknown to lawrs because there was no fibi and it was downstream out of the building comm issues...they dont review transmission of obs ) CWO corrected ASLOP missed over 60 transitions from VFR to IFR...CWO corrected ASLOP missed over 22 transitions from IFR to LOW IFR... CWO corrected... ASLOP/ALDARS missed 6 thunderstorms...CWO corrected... ASLOP tried to transmit 33 bogus specials...CWO stopped the bogus data... ASLOP missed over 33 times cloud layers below 1000 feet...CWO corrected....
So people, this is just basically one month out of the year that ASLOP doesnt hold up...it never has...never will...now some months are worse than this and some better, but mostly this is a good average of the garbage we all put up with...and we still have 2 days this month to add to this total...

ALDARS also misses many TS at our site. there have been times when I could see the LTG and hear the thunder...but ALDARS was silent. I have a professional independent lightning program. I have seen 4 or 5 strikes appear on my real time lightning loop before ALDARS picks up on it. I rarely wait for ALDARS to start a TS or VCTS. observers should not only rely on ALDARS for TS detection. continue to use your own eyes and ears and other visual aids. I have found that my lightning program is as good and many times better than ALDARS. ALDARS primarily detects CG lightning...and SOME ICCC lightning.

Just a quick update on Feb screwed up ASOS...ASOS missed over 170 times snow, ice pellets, freezing rain, freezing drizzle, and snow grains/pellets...left to itself and or LAWRS these hazards to aviation would have never been reported...CWO fixed it and reported all of it...but remember LAWRS=CWO according to the ken and barbie show...Sling Joe says no sweat...equal quality...BS!! ASLOP also missed over 50 times of VFR to IFR transition conditions...CWO fixed it and reported it...ASLOP missed IFR-LIFR of 12 times...CWO fixed that too... ASLOP missed clouds below 1000 over 24 times...CWO fixed that ,too...the CWO stopped over 30 bogus specials that would have gone out if LAWARS and ASOS was left to its own device...Over 80 remarks were issued for AVIATION SAFETY whereas, none of the remarks would have been reported by LAWRS...again 12 communication failures for long line dissimination were fixed by the CWO...LAWARS(tower cab) didnt even know there was a comm failure...they dont monitor whether weather goes out or not..."not my pay grade"...this would be the SOP of lawrs and their attitude of weather...beside we have a few on the ATC side that think they know more about weather than the CWO does...Manual ATIS doesnt match Metars at least 50% of the time...they make their own stuff up...i know i monitor them ,as a pilot this is totally unacceptable...and i blame the FAA for their attitude...never mind the CWO has over 150 years of observing and forecasting experience just in this office alone...but NOOOOO...the FAA wants to eliminate that!

I know it's tough... but don't let yourself get too cynical snowwx. We beat 'em last time & kept the stations manned - and we'll do it again in 2023. Keep up the good work - stats are important to congress too. Stay involved with your congress folks & staff - help them if you can - they will remember you.
