I know at one of the airports I work at, even though the ATIS is automated, the ATC calls for us to "resend" the weather. Reason......so they do not have to edit the ATIS. That is usually when we have a coms issue. We send a SPECI, if that is what they want, when they want to update the ATIS. ATC doesn't have time to do it, understandably! That is one reason we are employed, to ease the workload of the ATC so that the air is safe!

Funny, you guys are talking about issues with ATIS, our ATIS is down right for PM's now so I am calling the weather out to them as it changes via phone call. This is more crazy work for them to handle when the weather is bad! It will not be good if they take over weather from us.
