Hey everyone, This has been on mind and just wanted to share this. Why has not anyone lobbied for the CWO program to be established department recognized by the FAA as Federal Employees? So we can be done with constantly not knowing if we are going to be employed every 4 yrs. There has got to be someone we can speak to in congress or local Rep or the House or someone. I have heard many pilots say we would be flying into danger if it was not for the CWO program. It benefits all air travel and is vital for safety and observing ever changing weather conditions. Looking forward to thoughts on this matter please be kind in your replies as we are all working for the same goal to inform and help when we can.

That wouldn't be better job security necessarily, and would mean more regulations/less pay.

Any attempt by us to become fed employees will give fuel to those who think ATC LAWRS can do our work and the contracts aren't needed. The whole idea of contracting out weather back in '94 was to avoid distracted ATCs and to save the feds some money not having to pay ATC salaries to weather people. It will not be possible or even desirable to be federal employees without sacrifices to us or the NAS safety. Contractors can exercise greater control over their employees than the feds - thus achieving a better product. This 26 year veteran weather observer does not want to work directly for the FAA as one of their employees.

LAWRS is terrible and even worse in adverse weather. it shows dramatically that they have little or no training or even care about what ASOS spits out.

There were no NWS employees at my station/airport as far back as 1952 - flight service took care of it from 1956-1994, when they closed the FSS and contracted the weather. Before WWII there was an NWS observer at our old townsite. I have no idea what they did down in the lower 48. GS numbers need to be translated into what that would pay today... But thanks for the post - LAWRS just isn't interested in weather, even when they are in it it seems.
