How Would FAA Meet That $483 Million Cut from the Operations Budget?
While nothing is yet official, we should be prepared for the possibility of the following actions by the Agency to meet the $483 million budget cut:
Furloughs FOR EVERY FAA EMPLOYEE over the course of the remaining seven months of the fiscal year.
A hiring freeze.
A transfer freeze, including hardship and ERR transfers.
Reductions in operating hours, including shutting down facilities during mid-shift operations. We do not yet have a list from the Agency that specifies which facilities this might affect.
Leave cancellations in order to ensure operational coverage, including a possible declaration of “leave exigency” by the FAA Administrator or his designee.

Our sr obs just told me today that he was approached by an ATC controller who was told to begin investigating how we do our jobs. Said we could all be gone at end of the month, with ATC taking over all the obs. I'd like to think, since it's OUR jobs at stake, that we would be kept abreast of the situation, instead of finding things out through the rumor mill or by watching the news...

I'd like to think, since it's OUR jobs at stake, that we would be kept abreast of the situation, instead of finding things out through the rumor mill or by watching the news... Stranger things have happened I'm sure but does the FAA now think they can get the controllers trained and certified in 3 weeks?

Service level A. Guess the FAA can do whatever it likes. But at this point (having worked this gig for 15 +years), seems I've heard too many threats to take this one all too seriously. I guess one never knows for sure though...

I guess one never knows for sure though... Not good news but we probably need to hear from others before we take it too seriously, although you're not the first to report this. I seriously doubt the FAA could get all of the controllers certified in three weeks though.

They could get 'em certified to the level of profiency that FAA seems to care about...not much. We've all pored over thousands of completely hosed obs from ATC...but do you think the obstrollers are sweating out any disciplinary actions for them....not when FAA knows less about observing then even the obstrollers. Now that they have taken the first step and are letting 15 stations go May 1st, future changes won't be as slow to come, methinks.

We are service level A and one of the 35 OEP airports. None of the controllers at my facility have been approached about getting certified in LAWRS or "learning" what we do...so far
