I wasn't referring to the excellent QC work that TCU2U2 and Hlsto2 graciously does. I know that many of us on this site look forward to viewing their work on a daily basis. I know I do. What I was referring to that no one in the FAA looks at is the "stupid" log that we fill out on our shift. They took away most of the important things that we augment (and get no credit for). What they should have is a column that allows us to take credit for augmenting clouds when they are present and ASOS is showing CLR and changing the cloud layer when ASOS is reporting SCT and should be BKN or vice versa...you catch my drift. On second thought....every time we "have to" lay hands on the keyboard then we are augmenting, in my opinion, and we should be able to document what we did. It would paint a far better picture of all the ASOS deficiencies that we deal with on a continuous basis. I think the work that TCU2U2 and Hlsto2 does paints a far better picture by logging all the crap the towers spew (or doesn't spew out). I'm sure there are FAA HQ people that log onto this site and see all the mistakes that the tower folks make so I know they know what is going on and what they can expect if and when the tower takes over observing duties. They probably just shake it off and say "we'll deal with it when the time comes". Just my opinion folks....

Agreed Coco. We keep 2 years' worth of printed edit logs off our ASLOP - just in case (facilitates counting edits too...).

We (NWS) also have the "I" groups and do nothing with them. They appear often w/o precip and quite often if we have dense fog at temps below freezing. Pretty much there is a correlation between having dense fog, "I" groups and then mentioning "Glaze" in the ASOS daily climate, the number "6" represents Glaze in ASOS climate.

Printer goes away when it breaks... but it sure is nice to have had it for the last 18 years. This is cost cutting? Just wait until an ACFT MSHP and the NTSB wants documentation of the weather at time of incident - they want more than the 2-hour archive on the ASLOP.

nearest NWS office prepares the info. they obviously can print the archive and the acft mshp speci. they are also required to provide additional observed winds aloft...acft type...sob...etc. that's how we used to do it unless the requirements have changed since the mid 90s.

Last time NTSB was here was 2002... and they asked me for everything they could get, including a handwritten description of the weather in all at time of MSHP - much more than our METARS. If there is a death or serious injury in a MSHP you will be deposed as the expert witness to the wx at time of MSHP. I'm sure they got what they could from the NWS also.

when I was in NWS the NOAA attorneys told us that our obs would stand on their own. when a private law firm wanted me to go to court to explain my obs...the NOAA guys said I was entitled to an expert witness fee. when I passed this info to the law firm they grumbled and said forget it
