Just curious if anyone out there has ever reported it or seen it reported. As far as I know, variability only pertains to prevailing visibility.

hokiefan....you can put anything in remarks that you feel is operationally significant. Let's say your prevailing VIS is 6SM but VIS W is 3/4V11/2. I think that would certainly be operationally significant.

I report it all the time at KBUF...we have open fields that blow snow across the runways. I put VIS LWR IN BLSN W-N-NE or VIS 2 IN BLSN W-N-NE or VIS W-N-NE 1/4V2. I've had pilots tell me that these kind of remarks are extremely important.

Operationally significant to who? NWS or FAA or both? To a NWS Aviation Forecaster many remarks are a valuable aid in forecasting. Moon Dimly visible used to be a common remark, and also Precipitation very light along with many, many more remarks that are previous Contractor didn't care for, and didn't seem to understand that other agencies beside the FAA use our OBS.

Usually in the case of NWS significant remarks that don't easily fit in remarks, our office usually handles that by calling in. That said, many of us have forecasting experience through the military so we can help them out some.
