While I was in the cab taking my METAR this past hour, I just heard an older controller say to a young controller, "If the pilots have the ATIS, they have the current winds."
To which she replied, "But in the military, we had to issue the winds upon every takeoff and landing."
The older controller, who is near retirement age, said, "That's not a requirement at civilian airports. The only time I'd give them the winds is if the speed or direction is significantly different from the ATIS."
Um, no, if the pilots have the ATIS, they have the winds for the time stamp on the METAR or SPECI; which is not the same as the current winds! The ATIS winds could be up to 59 minutes old!

I've got pilots that reject ASOS' one minute delay...

I was just in the tower cab, taking the METAR, when the winds went missing. I studied the wind dials from each end of the runway, and came up with an average wind speed of 7 knots.
Then, I overheard a controller tell a pilot that the winds were calm.
So much for ATC passing accurate real-time wind data to pilots!

Sounds like the ATC was what was (too) calm. Or was it an UP (unconscious person)...

Was up in tower "fixing ASOS" Really logging it in and someone called for weather. ATC said. "looks like its gonna clear up soon". They were looking at a precip radar. lol. Were forecasted to be IFR all day

Great! I feel safe. Seriously, I don't feel safe at all and I'm on the ground.

I just heard a controller say, that when they worked at Opa Locka Airport in south Florida years ago, they would copy the sky condition from CWOs at Miami and Ft. Lauderdale; since the airport was about halfway between those other airports, and the runway configurations were the same at all 3.

I just heard a controller say, that another controller wasn't allowed to sleep in the NATCA office during the day. He claimed that provision was only for the midshifts. She countered that she was allowed to sleep on break any time she felt fatigued, even during the daylight hours.
I think his objection was based more on his penchant for playing video games during his break.

Several times, I've heard controllers say, "High pressure means good weather." Um, not always:

Sometimes, the controllers in the tower cab listen in to other frequencies, and put it on speaker so that the other controllers can hear it. I overhead a center controller tell a pilot heading to a small airport, "We have no weather or landing conditions available for that airport." I immediately checked ADDS/TAFS and found a 10-minute old METAR for the small airport. If I could find it quickly, why couldn't the center controller do so?
