Tower phone rings this morning (in 1/2SM SN)
"Yeah this is the tower, we have an aircraft inbound that requires 1SM to land, i was wondering if you could go out and take a look and bump the visibility up for us"
"I will go look for you, it is a steady 1/2SM right now, as soon as the Vis goes to a mile I'll immediately issue a SPECI"
"Oh.... ok" Click
Visibility did not go up to a mile for about a half hour after that call, I wonder what the VIS would have been reported as if ATC were responsible for the OBS

Classic! Circa 1950-2018 and counting (since the advent of commercial airplanes that is). This is why aviation surface weather observations are performed by federally certified weather observers and not tower bound ATC. This was also brought up several times at our "Safety Risk Management" meeting a couple of years ago for what that was worth.

Those of us that have GTA radios and are authorized to talk to aircraft get calls to lift the vis or ceiling from time to time... and our response is similar: "I'll be issuing a SPECI weather report and will contact you on this frequency when ______ lifts." Aw, come on, let me in there." "I won't lie for you, but I will let you know..."

..."I just lie to them." He was speaking of telling pilots about the wind at the other end of the airport, which could have impacted a pilot on final. He actually told a trainee to ignore the wind at one end of the airfield if it was significantly different than the wind on the runway in use, or even lie about it!

...that 8 trainees in a recent class at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City, failed! They were being paid $15 an hour for training wages, plus meals, plus cost of living allowance. That's at least $38,400 down the drain!

...that if they test positive for COVID-19, they get 10 days off with pay. All they have to do is submit a positive PCR test, which can be taken using a home kit, and no PII is required on the test either.
