Estimated Effects of Sequestration on Air Traffic: Phoenix
Airport: Phoenix Sky Harbor (PHX)
Current Arrival Rate: 80 flights per hour; departure rate is 60 flights per hour.
Estimated Effects of Sequestration: Eleven day furloughs will reduce training and cancel annual leave for controllers. If, under sequestration, the FAA implements 22-day furloughs then the tower will have to start to reduce operations at a minimum of approximately 10 to 15 percent.
SAN FRANCISCO: Estimated Effects of Sequestration on Air Traffic
AIRPORT: San Francisco International Airport (SFO).
CURRENT ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE RATES: SFO normally can handle 60 arrivals and 60 departures per hour at peak times on clear weather days during the busy spring and summer seasons. During off-peak months, that rate is normally 50/50.
ESTIMATED DROP IN AIRPORT CAPACITY EXPECTED DUE TO SEQUESTRATION: SFO’s arrival and departure rates could be cut dramatically, to 30-40 per hour, if sequestration-caused furloughs are put in place at both the airports and also the Northern California Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facility that controls the airspace within a roughly 50-mile radius of the Bay Area airports.
