What exactly does it mean when an ATC says they perform "duats"?

DUATS was a free service provided by the FAA some years ago. I think they shelved the program somewhere along the line. Anyway, it was for weather and flight planning for pilots. DUATS stands for Direct User Access Terminal Service. If an ATC says they perform that service they are talking out of their proverbial ass. Another example of their stupidity..... actually DUATS was the beginning of the end of the FSS as it was prior to DUATS. It allowed the pilot to get their own weather and enter their own flight plans instead of doing it with the FSS....

when I was stationed at MCN from 1983-1994...the FSS was across the hall from us. I used to secretly listen to them brief pilots. we could also brief pilots if they came into our office. well...they moved FSS across the street into a new building. NWS ordered us to put a sign on our door that essentially took us out of the pilot briefing business. we had an out in that we could give pilots "general briefings"
