I think scheduling fixes so controllers don't rotate shifts within a week would help. If they had schedules more like ours, my guess is there would be less fatigue, and you could rotate it monthly like they do for weather in the military as well to cut down on fatigue.
I don't think they'd have to hire more controllers. (More controller hires= they take the money out of our program)

We get caught sleeping we get fired & the union won't come to our defense - how come ATC gets a pass? They need a weather observer in the tower to keep them awake.

This whole sleep thing is a sham...NATCA has snowed some ACP sleep doctor to claim that they need naps and regen sleep on shift...Bull...They get paid for 8 hours of work with 6 digit figures...i know these guys/gals sleep,nap, rest up to 3- 3 1/2 hours per shift...basically getting paid to sleep...Thats BS...Ive worked 17 nights in a row and we dont get any consideration...Sleep and get fired... There has to be personal responsibility to SLEEP AT HOME before you come in...not on job premises...Additionally, quit trying to jam up shifts and trying to get 3 day weekends...you will end up sleeping one day just to recover anyway...i, myself, working nights only get 1 true day off anyway on my weekend...because i have to sleep after work and before i go back in which shortens the weekend up ...so the solution to ATC tiredness...is personal responsibility...sleep at home...stop turn around shifts...and this stuff of airplanes getting too close and pilots calling and getting no response will stop...
oh BTW...i did polysomograms (sleep testing) prior to this weather job...so i know what im talking about...
