Since the Lubbock CWO office seems to be the first one under threat of closure, I thought I’d put this together as an example of how to
use the data that’s been collected on the forums for the past 2+ years. Lubbock is surrounded by 4 LAWRS sites in 4 directions. Amarillo
(KAMA) is to the north; Abilene (KABI) is to the east; Midland (KMAF) is to the south; and Roswell NM (KROW) is to the west. The first
thing to do is to draw data from those 4 sites from the lightning project. The second step would be to cull all the errors posted on the
boards from those 4 sites. Print off all the data, and hand it to the ATM, and show them the quality of observations they would be likely
to get if Lubbock goes to LAWRS observers. Also stress the unreliability of ALDARS. Take the complied data, and send it to local media,
both print and broadcast; send it to mayors and Congressmen; send it to the airline offices that serve Lubbock. If there’s not enough data,
include Lawton OK (KLAW), Santa FE (KSAF), Ft. Worth (KFTW) or San Angelo (KSJT). Or at least stress the worst cases; for example,
LTG case #17 was when Santa Fe had a wind gust to 54 knots; had lightning nearby, but did not report a TS.
This can be repeated at any CWO office with nearby LAWRS sites. O’Hare and Midway have Kenosha (KENW), Waukegan (KUGN), DuPage
(KDPA), Palwaukee (KPWK), Aurora (KARR) and Peoria (KPIA) to draw data from. Cleveland would have Erie (KERI) and Burke-Lakefront
(KBKL); possibly using Mansfield (KMFD), Toledo (KTOL) and Allegheny County (KAGC). You get the idea. Find the closest sites, collect the
data, and send it to the powers that be.
First, here are some selections from the "ATC quality" thread, and the "greatest hits" thread. I only went back to page 60 on the "quality"
thread; plus, there are even older threads that are bound to have some examples of poor LAWRS obs.

midland lawrs...again. completely ignoring tstms that are obviously affecting airport operations. at least a dozen CG strikes within 5 miles of the AP during the past hour. stay tuned...this "quality" and "NO degradation" coming to larger...busier airports if the FAA has it's way. this should be a no brainer. leave the CWO program alone. If the FAA doesn't want it...make ALL CURRENT CWO's permanent with contractors and CWO's responsible for the program. the cost to benefit ratio demands this. pay it out of the general fund. cancel one of nobamas jaunts. it is now 0200Z...nothing out of maf since 0010Z..

Next, the "lightning project" already has these cases from around the Lubbock area:
CASE #s
4 KLAW
10 KABI
11 KFTW
17 KSAF level 5 case, G54KT
18 KSJT
30 KLRD level 5 case with lots of missed LTG
49 KABI
51 KLAW
66 KMAF
156 KABI
172 KLAW
193 KLAW
I scoured April into early May, and found these additional issues:
Abilene, Texas, 8 Apr 2015:
A bit of lightning near the airport was missed:
Midland, Texas, 12 Apr 2015:
LTGCG AT AP could have been reported here:
ATC response to the LTGCG AT AP seems to have been to put ASOS into AUTO mode:

You'll also find this as a case on the "AUTO thread".
Amarillo, Texas, 16 Apr 2015:
None of this lightning was reported:
Lawton, Oklahoma, 17 Apr 2015:
None of that lightning was reported, because KLAW had put ASOS into AUTO/TSNO mode, in the late morning:

That is despite ALDARS being activated at this site:
Abilene, Texas, 24 Apr 2015:
There were some lightning strikes near KABI before 1700Z:
Well, actually, there was one lightning strike AT KABI:
As mentioned in the graphic, no LTG/TS was reported.
Abilene, Texas, 26 Apr 2015:
2 days later, Abilene missed 10 lightning bolts, 4 of them within 5 miles:
Midland, Texas, 5 May 2015:
Lightning striking the airport, is NOT a VCTS!
Amarillo, Texas, 17-18 Aug 2015:
The older (purple-blue) bolts went unreported. The youngest bolt (orange) seems to have triggered a VCTS:
The trouble of course, was that bolt was not indicative of VCTS (5-10 miles away from the airport). It was much closer:
That bolt struck about 0448Z. This site took a SPECI to begin a VCTS not long after that; when TS should have been reported.
I hope this helps my fellow weather observers at Lubbock.
