first notification from the faa indicated a remark: GR LESS THAN 1/4 would be required for hail <1/4". I see somebody finally came to their senses and decided that NO remark would be required for small hail...duh

How many LAWRS sites that get 3/4" hail, will omit the remark, therefore causing the erroneous assumption that the hail is small?

They'll report it as UP.

there is supposed to be a cor on this so that hail less than 1/4" (GR LESS THAN 1/4 INCH) is not reported in remarks. the NWS and FA and A geniuses finally figured out that the absence of a remark would indicate the hail was less than 1/4" in diameter...

Only concern I see is if the observer (CWO or LAWRS) forgets to enter a size. The end users would (rightfully) assume the largest stones were less than 1/4 inch, when in reality they could be much larger. Best solution would have been for ALL sizes to be entered; GR 1/16, GR 1/8, GR 1/4, GR 1/2, etc.

don't think a CWO would forget...as for LAWRS..very few enter hail...period.
wonder why they didn't LEAVE GS for small hail and create another contraction for snow pellets...SP??

Neither spelling nor common sense seem to be their strong suits. We'd like ASLOP to be able to handle SG and IC also... Maybe they're listening (IP).

this is the disaster we get when people trained to talk to pilots or MAY have neen LAWRS...key word Limited...write technical manuals. it would be like a carpenter writing a manual on brain surgery.

Question, I'm a little confused on this issue. So former Ice Pellets, Sleet will now be reported as GR with GR LESS THAN 1/4 in remarks? With winter weather on the doorstep just want to get it right. Thanks in advance.

Ice Pellets are still reported as PL. Snow Pellets are reported as GS, intensity for GS must be manually encoded into RMKS, "GS LGT", "GS MOD", or "GS HVY." All Hail is GR now, the only time GR LESS THAN 1/4 is reported in RMKS is for Hail less than 1/4 diameter.

I don't believe you need the "GR LESS THAN 1/4" remark if hail is in fact less than 1/4" as it's assumed. Correct me if I'm wrong HLSTO or Tornado or TCU2U2.....
