Here's a good one. I heard that the ATM at AFW said if they were having trouble discerning what the weather was they would just ask the pilots. How rediculous.....

I may be way off the mark but after reading all the FAA information.
Those sites that have low or none will transfer to LAWRS
Those sites with medium risks cannot immediately go to LAWRS until the risk is "mitigated" to low
Sites with any high risk cannot go to LAWRS until they get them to Low
If this is incorrect I ask the moderator to simply delete this post.
It is difficult to find a definitive answer to anything concerning the SRM panel.
The FAA wants us all to go, so they can "evaluate" these risks and determine that they are actually lower than originally stated.

Has anyone been successful in their attempt to stay open? This is rather hard to quantify as even though some stations have managed to get assessed high and medium risks, the FAA still has the power to go back to the drawing board and re-write the rules to mitigate these down, whereas the CWO and their contractors get one shot during their SRMP's and if they do not show enough risk, it rubber stamped, done and over with. |

Keep your heads up everybody. There's some fights going on behind the scenes, but having said that, keep writing letters (to Congress, Industry Groups, Airlines, etc.) and making sure your contacts (airport managers, Congressional Aides, other key people) understand what is going on by keeping them updated via email, telephone, etc. Keep up the fight.

11 fatalities, 23 injuries,so far, from yesterday evenings tornadoes on the east side of the metroplex. based on TV video, looks like F-3 or higher. May 2013,six fatalities in tornadoes southwest of the metroplex. Wouldn't that at least put us in a medium if not high risk area?

You're using common sense histo2... This is a scam - the term "risk" has been redefined, and what constitutes "low", "medium", and "high" have been arbitrarily manipulated to meet their objectives. Peoples' lives are at risk and all they think about is how to get their own raises even if it means killing our jobs.

If your one of the 57 sites slated "to potentially" close (more are potentially coming -- but I digress) -- and have not had your SRMP meeting yet-- do everything you can to get a Congressional Rep (aide) in attendance at your upcoming meeting. YOU are invited,, if you pressure your ATM. Having an aide attend will force the ATM/facilitator to ask more questions/ be more open -- which is not (the case for many locations.) Folks-- this is far from being a done deal in 57 sites (potentially) going to LAWRS. This is just an attempt by FAA HQ's to see what they can get away with before they remove more sites. Remove sites like SAN -- which is a major airport , all other sites will soon be gone. In fact-- I have evidence that the removal of all CWO's is in effect over the next 2-3 years-- the first phase is the "57".

Those are what we call "cowboy" ATCs snowwx. Some in all professions think their indomitable. In our case, they really don't understand what goes in to the job of weather observation. It's not just changing the visibility every once in awhile people! You already do that. Your ATM is short-sighted and is being unfair to the ATC personnel he is in charge of. Shame on him. Get your congress people involved (and ask them to go to the meeting) if you have not already snowwx and it wouldn't hurt to call some of the airlines and other vested parties locally. Southwest and UPS are particularly pissed off.

I would sure like to know whats going on behind the scenes...due to the fact, word has it, that the FWA ATM WILL NOT back the CWO...because he thinks that, when he was at 2 other towers in the past, they were doing LAWRS with no problem...Unbelievable!! Their SRM is coming up Wednesday and the Kangaroo Court begins...Given the ATM and Airport ops manager are in bed with each other stating that airport ops can do the freezing precip stuff...ok be liable then for any problems that a judge can haul your rear end into court for testimony when something happens... So unless somebody higher than the ATM is told to stop this garbage...im afraid FWA will go by the wayside and lose over 100 years of legacy climate data and a garbage ASLOP data will be the norm...FAA in my book corrupt and needs purged... I have heard those comments too; "We took the Obs before"! Ask them if it was done augmenting an ASOS? I've said this before and will repeat. I have been in the weather business as an observer and forecaster/briefer for close to 50 years and it was easier to take a Manual Obs because you were in total control of the pace of the Obs, and the added solid remarks to clarify. You were also able to correct observations easier to make climatology more accurate. Now once he next obs goes out you can't correct the last. The ASOS, in a slow moving homogeneous situation with clouds moving directly over the machine with no local effects operates at it's best but, when it is a rapidly changing situation or in sectors. It all goes to hell, fast!! You either "can chase the machine or try to lock it in a position, and add remarks! The catch: You have to know how to do that! The last option which "we have seen too often" is to cut it loose on "AUTO" and take whatever it give! We have seen that all to often. Let me run this by you. If a pilot is filing or enroute to your location and checks the current weather, and someone is signed on (No AUTO) and all functions are reported as working EG "NO PWINO etc". How does the pilot know if it's being augmented or just running wild" The answer is in most cases they don't". You have to check the local machine log to see what's been augmented! Now many pilots are self briefing or in the air using ADS-B or ACARS weather to check before making rapid decisions, with what is essentially Garbage in; Garbage out! The forecasts are now in many cases Nowcasts chasing those same Obs! Even when they are being briefed by someone; the briefers can't tell whether there is augmentation or not. This IMHO is "often unsafe" Now in the flight pubs if "it doesn't say LAWRS and it's signed on" they know it's being augmented by a CWO or in the FAA PC language "an HWO". That is if the FAA has kept their own pubs current! |
