Before your SRMPs, identify your ASOS malfunctions & failures. I encourage everyone to have an e-copy of you ASOS's SYSLG, COMLG and EDITLG. Once in-hand, you can print your hardcopy for SRMP use. This was very important to our station because of all the recently documented ASOS outages. To accomplish this, I called our NWS ASOS Techs and asked them to send me the complete ASOS Log files prior to the SRMP. Do this ahead of time, because there may be quite a bit of data to sort & compile. Please note that SYSLG data is limited to the previous 3 months, EDITLG data limited to 9 days or so, and COMMLG data should cover an entire year. Using this data I had proof that within the last 3 months, we suffered: extended catastrophic ASOS failures/outages(plural), including backup battery power failures...and additionally, dozens of wind sensor outages and multiple communication outages. All in the last 3 months & many during adverse flying weather. On a separate note, our "9-day" EDITLG shows 900+ edits for ASOS METAR/SPECIs to cig, vis, wx, remarks, etc over the busy Christmas holiday flying period. With all this going on...It's hard to buy into the ASOS or the ASOS data. If an AT controller has to be the ASOS overseer with all this going on...then bad data, missing data, system anomalies would surely enhance the risk of "Controller Loss of Situational Awareness" among other things.
Go figure...our temperature sensor has been out for 4 hours today...

While we all know how dangerous it will be without us, the FAA will just push for nexgen ASOS when we emphasize system breakdowns - they will get what they want - more money. Emphasize SAFETY - maintenance log & comm log will only help when it can be shown by combining with weather data that a safety issue occurred - the more dramatic the better. Editlog tells what we really do - they need to know that too, but emphasize safety, include distracted ATCs as a serious problem.

I need to vent!!!!!!
I have been informed that the ATCs will have a dedicated controller to do weather. Not their entire shift, just until their break or 4 hour sleep break. Then another ATC will take over. I thought this was a SAFETY RISK PANEL TO DETERMINE IF IT WAS FEASIBLE. Where is the cost savings? No degradation of service? They ARE going to get a pay raise. That is why all of this is happening. It pisses me off that possibly in the future the mid "observer" will sleep half of the 8 hour shift when at the present if the CWO fell asleep for a second they would be terminated. This is a farce and I really think it is GOING to happen. no matter what WE do. Perhaps that is why OUR union is a no show, no contact, no anything. Im fighting for my site but Im feeling it is pointless. I am being included but I get the sense that the decision has been made. Everyone is against it but only because they dont want to have to do it. They certainly think that they CAN. REDICULOUS.

What we need is one of our Congressional Representatives that has balls big enough to attach a rider to the FAA spending bill that prevents them from closing any CWO's until the current LAWRS sites can demonstrate significant improvement and accountability through a comprehensive QC program. The FAA keeps mouthing no degradation and quality observations. So, prove it with something other than a bunch of words......

Didn't Susan Collins try that already?

Why not just encourage a rider that says "no CWO closures or no money"? If you give them ANY rational, they will attempt to find a way to circumvent. Simple statement, to the point, no argument. Congress wants and needs to know why, but congress must demand the FAA do what we want to prevent the whole program from collapsing.

GEG (Spokane) identified a HIGH risk yesterday after an intense SRMP and the review ended abruptly without pursuing another quite serious risk. "This morning or 14 1/2 hours later," I/we are in the a meeting with our Congressional Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Senior Representative who also delivered the GOP speech after the President's "State of the Union" last year). Today we're actually sitting across the conference table from each other and CWO is the headline topic. This is only a snippet, but rest easy...much, much more was covered and decided upon. A very productive meeting and a new Congressional partner vested into the outcome of the CWO! Spokane CWO was at the top of the agenda and the focus stayed there for almost the full hour Congresswoman McMorris Rodgers had scheduled to hear multiple issues. After absorbing the background information, she was brought up to speed on SRMPs (including ours) and she agreed there's something problematic and risky taking shape. Congresswoman McMorris Rogers has proposed to draft and forward a letter from her office addressing the significant impact of CWO closures to her fellow Representatives of the 57 targeted CWO sites. This will also include the existing position letters from Delta, Southwest, Spokane Airports Tenants Asso., Spokane Turbine Center, the Nov 19 CWO Vendors letter to Senate Committees, and other related documents A huge thank you to Larry Krauter and the Spokane Airport for making this meeting possible. He made CWO the headliner and guaranteed an opportunity to voice our concerns from center stage before Congresswoman McMorris Rogers. I'm just the SWO here...gftlwx Please find attached a letter that Rep. McMorris Rodgers has sent to Rep. Shuster regarding the FAA bill. Contract Weather Observers and Contract Towers are front and center. Please share with all those that you think will benefit from this information.

Anyone have anymore SRM results for the stations that were scheduled in the last couple of weeks? Just trying to update my grid before I repost it. After today, there's not another SRM for about a week, so I thought this would be a good time. PM me with any specific results, comments, stories, etc..
