FU,
Love the fact that you can randomly call someone a P.O.S. for stating their opinion. And if my opinion is the most ridiculous thing on the internet, then you certainly need to do more reading!
As far as the union issues go, I can only talk about my experience, which I did. I rely on my talents to get me where I have gone, not some union to tout and get me money. Apparently I do alright because I get paid just as much as my co-workers in my union. While you rely on your precious union to do your negotiating, I choose not to. My choice, and if the rules do change and I get paid lower than the union members do for the same job, I will be sure to fight for more money based on my experience and work attitude. It's called self pride.

"The only way to guarantee an increase is wages is doing your job well, and doing it right! Plain and simple."
That statement is ridiculous.
"While you rely on your precious union to do your negotiating, I choose not to."
But you are getting the same wages as your co-workers in the union? Who do you think negotiated those wages?
"I will be sure to fight for more money based on my experience and work attitude. It's called self pride."
Let us know how that works out for you.
"Love the fact that you can randomly call someone a P.O.S. for stating their opinion."
Nothing random about it.

You need to do some research on right to work states. Something tells me you know nothing about it. A little tidbit, right to work states have lower unemployment rates than non right to work states.
My co workers know that I am non-union. It's a choice each one of us made and there are more than one of us that are non union. I will be happy to negotiate my wages with my employer, I find it fun and always get more than what my low end goal was, so I will let you know how that goes, if that happens while I am a CWO

I know how it goes...you'll get what the wage determination states is the minimum rate for your county.
So you are in a right to work state, meaning you are not required to join the union, yet you only get union wages because the majority of the workers at your site joined and paid the dues that you refuse to pay. How do you not feel like a scumbag or a thief?

Wow, this is quite heated it seems.
I don't want to join in the middle, but like Irishwx, I am not a union member and I think only half or not even half of my office is. I like not being a member; don't see the benefits (or haven't yet) of being one.

^ Compare your sites CBA to the wage determination for your county. Those are the benefits.

^ So, you are saying they get us more money in order to give them money? I wouldn't mind being a union boss!!! HA!

^ Yeah that's what I'm saying. I give them 720 a year to get an extra 10000 a year, seems like a good investment to me.

It's going to vary from site to site but if you ever want to know what the benefits are download the wage determination for your county and compare the wages and benefits on it to the wages and benefits in your CBA.
If you've ever worked off a wage determination you know that the benefits are pretty slim. Night differential, Sunday differential IF you work 40 hours and 10 paid holidays is about all they provide.

I believe that if your station has a CBA..that it provides that all bargaining unit members consistent with law, must be members in good standing of the union as a condition of employment. That agreement is normally referred to as a Union Security Clause. In order to comply with the collective bargaining agreement you must pay dues. If you decline in writing to pay dues, you will be required to pay a monthly service fee...which is the same as dues, only you have no right to union things such as voting on local issues, contract ratifications etc. The law provides that if you fail to comply with this provision of the collective bargaining agreement you may be discharged.
And rightly so....upon being hired to your job...you are told that the station in under a CBA. If you don't like your position....find another career.

PATCO definitely gets us more than we pay for. No matter how good an observer you are, no company that I am aware of is going to pay more than the WD rate, which sometimes isn't updated for years. If everyone at a site stops paying union dues, I doubt Jerry Tuso will fight for raises each year. Everyone who benefits should contribute to paying dues, otherwise you are just mooching off others.
On the other hand, PATCO has very little influence on FAA regulations, so if the FAA changes rules in order to close sites, as has been rumored, PATCO wasn't going to save those jobs. Union sites have been shut down in the past, and I'm sure some union sites just got their hours cut too. Being union doesn't guarantee your job, but it sure does get better wages and benefits while you have that job.
