I called the NWS and asked them either tonight if they heard anything. They said NO...our office has an excellent relationship with them. My ATC manager e-mailed me back yesterday with the same response. We have an excellent relationship with him too.

My company is contacting local congressmen and senators seeking some answers. The way this is being handled is disgusting to say the least. Whatever happened to compassion, ethics, and placing people first??? Remember the old adage that "People are the greatest asset"? I think that concept is very much lost within the FAA world. Sad.

At our site the controllers don't even know how to sign off of the ASOS, when I give them a call to inform them of maint. and they need to sign off, It's the same response every time, how do I do that? If this all goes down, which it probably will, I wish the FAA luck on relying on antiquated piece of crap and a workforce who doesn't have a clue, or really care about the weather, being the ones responsible it's accurate. It's "UP"-ing out today will be the norm.

The sad truth is the FAA folks won't be held to any standard. They're not weather people so nobody can really hold them accountable for poor weather reporting. If they fail to report when the weather goes bad, they can simply say controlling was my priority. When controlling is bad, they will simply say it's because they had that damn weather to worry about. Either way they win and us weather types and the general public lose. Sorry, just venting. I'm obviously very frustrated. I will get off the soapbox.

So everyone is basically just waiting in hope that this is just a scare tatic? Does this happen during all contracts? You would think the contractors we work for would be hitting the panic button by now.

Anyone hear how much of the fat at the top levels of the FAA is going to get trimmed? I'm pretty sure the answer is 0%. What a pathetic organization. The best solution to this f'd up mess is to privatize the entire air traffic system. There are way too many layers of incompetence to fix the current system.

It's a little known fact that the controller was working on the ASOS when this occurred www.ntsb.gov/doclib/reports/2007/AAR0705.pdfI was told this by a controller friend 3 days after it happened. Read how the NTSB wrote it up in 3.1 12 and 13 radar responsibilities and a lower-priority administrative task

Vent away KC Fan, our site basically had a perfect storm last Sunday, TS, GR, GS, PL, RA, +SN, all on one observers shift at our manned site in Montana, highly unlikely this time of year but we were left with a giant pile of ice after this magnificent weather event. The next day one of the FAA Sups, called and asked me to explain all of the terminology in the Metars. I applaud the man on duty, he did a hell of a job, like I said in my previous rant good luck.

I am just confused on how fast the decision could go from a few cut backs to dumping the whole program. You think there would be atleast some sort of spin down and set up. The observations we take are just not for use at the airports, the NWS also uses them I have fielded calls from the tower and the weather service with in 10 mins of eachother. Half of the ATC do not even know how to read a TAF or an observation for that matter. I will be shocked if this happens so abruptly. The contractors would have known this in Jan when they were suppose to be awarded the new contracts

wxobs 1- I agree with you to a T. I don't remember the fine details,, but this seems somewhat similar to the Russ Chew incident some years back. Big whig at the FAA said bye bye CWO. Someone else said no no. This just seems too abrupt,, but what do I know.

Well hopefully for all of us atleast we will get another contract approved on 1 april. Its messed up I had just talked to our station supervisor about this and a new contract on Tuesday, he did not mentiona anything. I understand some of the smaller airports scaling back their operation hours. But major airports I thought would be safe. All the recent weather which has desroyed a good amount of the south midwest and east coast. Also the multiple emergency plane landings it does not make any sense for us to get axed at this time
