My connections have confirmed they saw an official letter stating the following:
- 15 March: Contractors will be notified by this date. - 15 May-15 July: Controllers obtain LAWRS certifications. - 15 July: Closure of all CWO sites except Alaska and Colorado.
My guess is people are hearing different things because this could be done in phases with 15 July being the final for all sites.
I believe all current contractors will be given extensions on the current contract and the new contract never occurs. It doesn't make sense to start the new one with new vendors anymore.

The FAA has a CWO telcon scheduled for tomorrow. Maybe the FAA will provide some more info then. Any idea why the Colorado CWO's are staying open?

I think vortlobe is correct. This is starting to smell a little fishy. I don't doubt anyone's sources but it could be a contingency plan or something similar to that in case the sequester nonsense isn't resolved.

Are they in the process of shredding the FAA service level standards documentation? When I first started in this field, the FAA promised equal or better service with the elimination of the FSS stations, poof, gone. Replaced with the Service level standards, that will disapear also. This is all ludicrus. Closing Towers, furloughs and elimination of programs that make a difference are all part of the plan to inflict pain. Reversal of this playbook seems unlikely.

Waiting to hear back from our ATC manager, however it seems it is just a matter of time before the affected airports get the news.
With DC in basic shutdown due to the storm (that really wasn't) - notification may not go out for another day or so for those still awaiting notice.

Kinda of had me till the part about CO stations... something is amiss.

I like the optimism in some of these emails and can only hope you are right. It does seem a bit fishy, but I don't think it is. I guess we will know if the 3/15 deadline passes and nothing is heard from the FAA. My fingers, toes, and eyes are all crossed.

Ok...the word came from a very reliable source, the tower manager. It was on a memo and the local NWS already knew about the possibility. The date for 109 sites is May 1. There are some going July 1. Alaska and a few in colorado are exempt, for now. It will be made public knowledge on March 15.

Did your ATM mention how they were going to get the controllers trained and certified in 45 days? Seems a bit optimistic on their part.

Wouldn't seem too difficult given the fact they can't fail the test.
The FAA has been looking to get rid of the CWO program for some time now. This is just the perfect excuse and the timing was right. Like someone standing outside bank waiting year after year to rob it and then one day all of the tellers happen to be blind. Timing is everything.
