They'll take the CBI course and pass the test. I don't know how long the CBI course takes but if they are still planning on furloughing the controllers for 2 or 3 days a month as has been reported it doesn't leave them much time to train. As I said above the May 1 date seems optimistic.

This is the reply I have received from the CWO Operations Team Lead: "The Contracting Officer will notify your company if there is any change to the Program. To date, We have not received any instructions to eliminate the CWO Program."
Wonder if he would really admit to the program being canned?

There is no way in hell arpts the size of ATL, ORD, CLT, etc controllers can take over the wx!! Theres just no way!! I can see them doing away with the CWO at most of the airports but not at the major hub arpts!!! I agree I believe its all smoke and mirrors!!

There is one important human attribute missing here... Common Sense. That is why I think anything can happen. Does it make sense to have controllers take weather at busy towers? Heck no. Does it make sense to shut down the entire CWO program? Heck no. Does it make sense that this is happening? Absolutely. Because there is no common sense in this administration or in the decision to shut this program down.
As for the statement that a contractor would be given word from the CO regarding the status, that is a true statement, but only after everyone hears the truth through rumors and the controllers first. CWO vendors are almost always last to hear anything. Should it be that way? No, but again, common sense does not prevail here.

Got some news. There's a document circulating in the western region that discusses the possibility of closing 44 CWO's in the western region in the event the budget issues aren't resolved that has leaked out. That explains why they show AK and CO sites remaining open. Over the next few days the plans of the other regions will probably leak out and they will show other CWO's remaining open in each region in the event they have to make drastic cuts.

Hmmm....without naming my site, our site was listed on the "memo" and we are an A hub site. Guess we wait till March 15. at this point-- what difference does it make to be so secretive where we work if the entire program is gonna be gone??? Times like these, we need as much info as possible.

yes I'm in the western region but will respect my supervisors request to keep things on the QT, especially since he is also hearing that this whole idea of pulling the program could be used as a "threat", ie, okay we'll make cuts and we'll cut where it hurts. That being said, it's true there is a memo, it's true the memo lists 109 sites to be spun down by May 1 with the remainder in July this year. Perhaps they dump the program and spin it back up in a couple months like they did in the 90's. Hard to say....

I've now seen the "memo" from the Western Region and it lists ALL sites outside of AK as being closed, including CO. It also stipulates that the FAA's Chief Operating Officer has decided to transition all remaining 109 sites to LAWRS regardless of the sequestration result.
